I've gotten into the habit of wearing only Havaiana flips, and during the hot, sultry days of the rough Houston Spring-Summer-Fall, I tend to wear my flip flops just about every day--uh, SO comfy, but oh, what a style-killer. Although I may be storing only about half my collection for the Winter, I still wanted to give them all a thorough scrub-a-dub-dub beforehand (plus, two pairs of mine ate serious mud during the rain last week). Nobody likes stinky feet, and even more so, nobody likes opening a storage container after housing stinky shoes for a few months in a no-A/C, zero circulation attic. I've heard of the ol' "just throw your flip flops in the dishwasher" trick, but that seriously grosses me out. In the words of my good friend Jenni, it's just vomit-ose. I also am of the mindset that a nice hose-down just isn't good enough, so I headed to the trusty internets. After a few clicks, I stumbled across OMFG Style's guide to Haviana washing. Bloggess Cody did the all the research and trial-by-error already, so I'm totally just going to follow her personal combination:
- Soak sandals in a warm water and bleach solution for 30 minutes
- Rinse, scrubbing with a toothbrush
- Soak sandals in a warm water and dish soap solution for another 30 minutes
- Rinse, again scrubbing with a toothbrush
- Set to dry somewhere sunny
Now, although the how-to seems Havaiana brand specific, I'm sure it'll work on just about any rubber flips.
Let me know your thoughts!
